After a mild, wet and windy start, colder conditions
prevailed from the 3rd to 11th, as low pressure over
the North Sea brought winds mostly from a N or NW
direction. It was often wet, especially in north-east
and east England, the Midlands and East Anglia, with
snow falling on the 6th in northern areas, particularly
over high ground. Emley Moor (near Huddersfield) reported
12 cm. More snow fell over the higher parts of the
Pennines during the next few days with Boltshope Park
(Durham - 434m) reporting 21 cm on the 8th.
After some rain on the 12th mild and dry and mostly
sunny weather prevailed from the 13th to 17th as high
pressure became firmly established over southern areas.
The 16th and 17th were especially warm in the south
with Shobdon (Hereford & Worcester) reaching 21.2
°C on the 17th.
From the 18th to 24th temperatures returned to near
normal as winds became NW. It stayed dry at first
but a low moving down the North Sea on the 21st brought
rain and showers to many places, especially in the
north. The south stayed mainly dry with some sunshine
during the next few days, while occasional rain and
showers affected northern areas.
After some rain on the 25th/26th, the weekend of
the 27th/28th was mainly sunny and rather warm, but
with strong SW winds later in the west. The 29th and
30th were cloudy with rain at times, however temperatures
climbed steadily on the 31st as S winds set in, giving
a very warm day in the south. Rainfall ranged from
140% in NE and E England to 58% in south-east and
central southern England.
