Diary of highlights

After a mainly dry and mild start, Gravesend (Kent) reached 17.8 °C on the 1st, a vigorous depression crossed the north of the region on the 5th. There was some heavy rain in Wales and Cumbria with local flooding, thunder was also reported in places. Ennerdale and Summergrove in the Lake District had between 90 and 100 mm of rain in 24 hours. At Shoreham Airport in Sussex a gust of 64 kn was recorded during a severe hail storm in the afternoon.

Pressure began to rise thereafter and by the 9th an anticyclone became firmly established over Scotland. Mainly dry weather prevailed apart from some occasional light rain or drizzle in the north and north-east, south-west parts had the best of any sunshine. Where skies cleared overnight some fog and frost developed.

On the 15th a cold front crossed the region heralding a period of cold weather with wintry showers (some thundery) mainly in the north and east. Counties adjacent to the North Sea were especially affected during the 18th and 19th with snow over the hills. There were good sunny periods generally but there was a keen N wind which later veered NE. A quiet interlude on the 21st allowed temperatures to drop to -6.0 °C at Redesdale in Northumberland.

The remainder of the month was mostly mild or very mild, however it became increasingly disturbed with gales at times as a number of deep depressions passed to the north. A series of fronts gave some heavy rain in places (mainly in the north and west) as they traversed the region. Valley (Anglesey) recorded a gust of 67 kn on the 26th. On the 28th Capel Curig (Gwynedd) had a gust of 70 kn, while Keswick (Cumbria) received 70 mm of rain in 24 hours ahead of a weakening cold front which moved south-east. After some rain cleared from the south-east during the 29th more wind and rain spread in on the 30th.
