England and Wales
Changeable and mostly warm. Thundery outbreaks alternated with warm dry sunny spells. Hot at times in south. Funnel clouds observed in places.
Diary of highlights
1st3rd A low centred to the west transferred to the North Sea, filling as it did so. There were outbreaks of thundery rain on the 2nd and 3rd especially over south-east England and East Anglia, with over two inches of rain reported from parts of Sussex during the 3rd.
4th11th High pressure allowed mostly very warm weather with good sunny periods particularly in eastern and south-east England. It was mainly dry but showers, some thundery, broke out in places on the 7th, with more storms affecting Kent, Sussex and parts of Essex on the 8th. Wales and north-west England had less sunshine though staying warm. Northern England had heavy rain on the 9th while north-west areas were cloudy with rain and drizzle on the 10th.
12th
17th An unsettled period generally with fairly frequent rain and thundery outbreaks affecting Wales, northern England and the Midlands later. South-east England and East Anglia were mostly dry, though hot at first on the 12th and 13th, temperatures returned to near normal by the 16th and 17th. Eastern and south-east England continued to benefit the most with good sunny periods.
18th21st More thundery rain affected the Midlands, Wales and East Anglia, especially on the 18th. It was mainly rather cool with sunny periods. South-east England had most sunshine and was mainly dry. During the 21st heavy hail and thunderstorms were active over north Wales, the Pennines, Yorkshire and Humberside, with pronounced funnel clouds in attendance. Hail drifted to six inches in places, while 54 mm of rain fell in an hour at Bowland in the Pennines.
22nd
24th With high pressure to the north-east mainly dry sunny weather prevailed, apart from some thundery rain in the extreme south-west of England . It became hot in the south later.
25th
28th More thundery outbreaks especially in the south and east, where it was very warm or hot at first with Jersey Airport reaching 31 °C and Southampton 30 °C both on the 25th. One-inch hail smashed car windscreens at Lands End later the same day.
29th
31st Mostly dry and sunny at first with some early morning mist and fog in places but rain occasionally heavy spread from the north-west during the 31st reaching London by evening.

Scotland
A month with long spells of light winds. A few cyclonic and anticyclonic spells occurred, but the dominant feature was sunny periods and showers, with a high incidence of thunder. The contrast between cloudy conditions in the north-east, with warmer and sunnier weather in the south-west, continued.

1st3rd Rain or showers as a low moved south-east across Scotland.
4th
5th Warm westerly with fronts giving occasional rain in west.
6th
8th Ridge with slow moving front giving quiet weather.
9th
10th Rain or showers as a low moved east across Scotland.
11th
13th Band of rain moving east.
14th
21st Long spell with sunny periods and slow moving thundery showers.
22nd
25th Fine weather in anticyclonic conditions.
26th28th Light winds with sunny periods and showers.
29th30th Fine weather in an anticyclone.
31st Band of rain moving east in association with a low approaching from the west.

Northern Ireland
Warm and very sunny, but rainfall above normal due to heavy downpours and frequent thunderstorms.
Diary of Highlights
1st15th Warm but dull with sunshine values well down on normal. Persistently warm nights, with temperatures rarely falling below 15 °C from 6th to 13th. Thunderstorms and local heavy or violent downpours of rain occurred on 2nd.
15th – 21st Frequent thunderstorms and locally heavy or violent downpours. Thunder recorded somewhere across Northern Ireland on all days during this period.
16th – 31st Very sunny second half of the month, more than compensating for the dull first half. Rainfall was typically of heavy showers but of short duration. This was typified by one station receiving over 11 hours of sunshine on Sunday 20th, but also recorded 58 mm of rain during a heavy or violent shower or thunderstorm.
