Diary of highlights
|
|
1st – 8th A
slack low pressure area persisted for most of the time,
with associated fronts migrating slowly southwards, bringing
showery conditions to many places. Temperatures were near
normal at first but it became cooler later. The 1st to the
5th were particularly wet with widespread outbreaks of rain
and thundery showers. Overnight on the 4th/5th many southern
counties of England were affected by an area of heavy thundery
rain resulting in falls between three and four inches over
parts of Surrey and Sussex. Local flooding was reported
from the Redhill and Reigate area. After the clearance of
a thundery rain belt from the south coast early on the 7th
things became relatively drier and brighter for a time as
a weak ridge of high pressure extended from the Azores high.
9th – 11th The cloudy cool
theme continued as low pressure moved south-east to the
southern North Sea. Winds became northerly with widespread
outbreaks of rain and thundery showers.
12th – 16th With low pressure
centred to the east, NW and N winds brought mainly cloudy
cool weather especially to eastern parts of England. Apart
from some heavy rain early on the 13th around London it
was mostly dry with western areas enjoying some good sunny
periods.
17th – 24th High pressure
was in control much of the time resulting in mostly dry
warm or very warm weather, Wolverhampton reached 2 8°C on
the 21st. There were long sunny periods and light winds
particularly over central and western areas. Mostly clear
nights allowed early morning mist and fog patches to form
in places. East coast counties were cloudier and cooler.
As the high pressure centre moved north a more organised
area of cloud and occasional light rain or drizzle affected
some east coast counties from the 22nd.
25th – 31st More unsettled
conditions returned with fairly widespread thundery showers
on the 27th, 28th and 29th some were accompanied by hail.
There were local patches of early morning mist and fog.
Heavy rain affected north Wales and northern England on
the 31st.
