Diary of highlights
|
|
1st – 6th Generally
unsettled this period as small but active low pressure systems
and their associated fronts meandered across the region.
After some thundery activity in the south-east on the 3rd,
a frontal zone hesitated over northern England during the
4th/5th bringing thunderstorms, prolonged heavy rain and
local flooding to the area. Parts of the Yorkshire Dales
had over three inches of rain in 48 hours. Temperatures
were mostly near or rather above normal but often cool in
the north and chilly at times in the south-east. The best
of the sunshine was over south-east England and East Anglia,
which also received very little rain.
7th – 14th The weather was
mostly changeable with some rain and drizzle affecting west
and north-west areas at times. Some thunder was reported
on the 6th and 9th as weak cold fronts moved eastwards across
the region, though on the whole dry settled conditions prevailed
over most southern and eastern counties of England. Temperatures
ranged from near normal in Wales and north-west areas to
well above further east, where the sunshine was plentiful
and rainfall sparse.
15th – 20th Some rain and
drizzle, with hill and coastal fog affected western areas
at first on the 15th. High pressure then developed over
the UK and drifted eastwards to the continent, allowing
dry southerly winds to bringing steadily rising temperatures.
The 17th to 19th became hot or very hot over most of England
and Wales. London reached 32.4 °C on the 19th its hottest
day for ten years and its hottest June day since 1976. Coltishall,
Norfolk had 32.8 °C, the highest temperature so far this
year. During the 20th the remnants of very warm air over
the south-east corner were replaced by a fresher, showery
westerly airstream.
21st – 25th A cool unsettled
period with outbreaks of rain and showers affecting many
places, especially in the north and west. Some of the showers
were blustery with thunder.
26th – 30th A mostly quieter
period with the best of the sunshine in the south and west
where it became warm at times. Much cooler conditions prevailed
near the North Sea. The 29th was sunny and warm in the west
but cloudy and cool in the east with maximums of only 13 °C
in Norfolk. Later that day some thundery showers developed
form Herefordshire to Hampshire. Some heavy rain early on
the 30th over the Midlands, East Anglia and the south-east
died out later.

| Scotland |
| Record June gales in north of Scotland. |
| Diary of Highlights |
|
June oscillated between spells of changeable
or cyclonic weather and more settled anticyclonic interludes.
However, the cyclonic spells never produced any heavy downpours
of rain and the anticyclones contained weak fronts, so the
contrast in weather was not as pronounced as it might have
been. The cyclonic spells occurred on the 1st, 8th to 13th
and 20th to 23rd. The culmination of these events took place
on the 13th when a record deep low near the Faeroes produced
record breaking gales (for June) in the north of Scotland,
with gusts at Lerwick reaching 80 m.p.h. Anticyclones dominated
the weather from the 2nd to 5th, 14th to 19th and from the
24th onward. The air in the anticyclonic spells was mostly
of cool origin, but on the 18th and 19th warm southerly
winds pushed temperatures towards 27 °C in the south of
the country.
