sunny spell second week. Local flooding in places. |

Diary of highlights
|
|
1st - 9th Mostly unsettled conditions
prevailed as a series of lows passed close by. Some places
had thundery rain at first, while the 3rd and 4th were mainly
dry and sunny under a transient ridge of high pressure,
but rain affected north-west areas later. Further rain broke
out in most parts, with thunder reported in south-east England
on the 5th. Over north Wales the rain was heavy at times,
however England stayed mainly dry on the 7th. It became
quite windy in places on the 6th and 7th with a deep depression
south of Iceland. Temperatures were generally near normal
with sunny periods between the wet spells.
10th - 13th A mainly dry quiet period with some sunny
and very warm or hot weather over much of the region. Hawarden
near Chester touched 29 °C on the 11th. Northern England
was cloudier and cooler with outbreaks of rain, the lower
temperatures moving south by the 13th.
14th - 19th Apart from a mainly dry day on the 16th,
a very wet period ensued with frequent outbreaks of rain,
heavy and thundery in many places. Yorkshire, Cornwall and
the Channel coast counties were particularly affected. Walderton
in West Sussex collected 84 mm during the 15th, while many
locations in south-east England experienced local flooding
from thunderstorms.
20th - 23rd Rather cool with sunny periods and some
thundery rain, heavy at times in the north, was followed
by drier weather on the 22nd. The 23rd became very warm
and sunny.
24th - 27th Another very wet spell with frequent outbreaks
of rain, heavy and thundery at times, as frontal systems
crossed the region from the south-west. The 27th became
windy especially over western parts as a vigorous Atlantic
low became centred off south-west Ireland.
28th - 30th More sunny periods and showers [some thundery]
as the low over southern Ireland drifted slowly south-east
to south-west England and filled. Some showers on the 30th
were quite heavy in places, notably over north-west London
around midday moving into the Midlands later. A waterspout
was spotted near Brighton, with a funnel cloud reported
from Lincolnshire. Some parts were affected by mist and
fog patches early in the morning and later in the evening.

| Scotland |
| Anticyclonic and northerly spells of weather
occurred briefly at the start of September, but otherwise
were notable for their absence. Winds blew mainly from west
through south to east, and changeable weather, with bands
of rain separating bright and showery conditions, were common.
However, there were also some cyclonic spells bringing some
longer periods of rain. |
| Diary of Highlights |

and showery conditions predominating.

on the 4th the temperature fell to -1.8 °C at Corgarff and
-0.8 °C at Kinbrace.
5th - 9th Changeable westerly weather type with a mixture
of bands of rain and sunny periods and showers. A deep depression
passing between Iceland and Scotland brought the first gales
of the autumn, with gusts reaching 55 m.p.h. at Prestwick
on the 6th and 60 m.p.h. at Lerwick and Stornoway on the

Eskdalemuir on the 10th and 34 mm at Inverbervie on the
11th.
13th - 17th Return to changeable westerly regime, but

that day there was 31 mm of rain at East Kilbride.
