2003 monthly weather summary

JANUARY
FEBRUARY
MARCH

Temperatures were generally a little above average. It was very sunny across the south and the west. The north and east experienced above average rainfall and some significant snowfall in the second week and towards the end of the month.

Aboyne recorded a temperature of 18.3 °C on the 26th January. Aviemore recorded a minimum of -18.6 °C on 7/8 January.

A mostly dry and very sunny month across the UK, with mean temperatures slightly above average.

Moderate and at times heavy snowfall caused widespread disruption across Northern Ireland on the 1st and 2nd. A high of 15.7 °C was recorded in Central London on the 26th.

The whole UK experienced mean temperatures well above average, with day times exceptionally above average. Most places were also very dry and exceptionally sunny.

Many stations broke their existing March sunshine records. The temperature at Altnaharra rose from -9°C to 18°C on the 17th, the greatest diurnal rise in temperature for Scotland in March.

JUNE

It was warm and sunny across the UK. Most places experienced below average rainfall, particularly down the eastern side of England, where some areas had less than half their normal April total.

Wolverhampton recorded a high of 27.3 °C on the 16th, the highest April temperature in the UK since 16th April 1949. Hawarden recorded a low of -7.5 °C on the 10th.

Temperatures were again above average across the whole of the UK. Scotland and Northern Ireland had a very wet and dull month. In comparison England and Wales as a whole had average sunshine, with some southern areas of England experiencing less than average rainfall.

Central London recorded a high of 29.1 °C on the 31st, with Bastreet (Cornwall) recording a low of -3.4 °C on the 15th.

Temperatures were well above average, with England and Wales having their warmest June mean temperature since 1976. Monthly rainfall totals well above average, over East Anglia and Lincolnshire.

Shepshed (Leics) recorded the highest temperature of the year so far with 30.5 °C. Shepshed also received 39 mm of rainfall in just one hour on the 1st.

AUGUST
SEPTEMBER

It was very warm across all parts of the UK, with the Northern Isles around 3 °C higher than their average mean temperature for July. Northern Ireland had significantly below average sunshine.

Highest temperature of the month was 33.6 °C at Wisley (Surrey) on 15th. Cardinham (Cornwall) reported 58 mm in the 12 hours ending 0900 GMT on 25th.

Very warm and sunny across all parts of the UK. Rainfall was well below or exceptionally below average across the majority of the UK.

Highest temperature was 38.5 °C at Brogdale near Faversham (Kent) on 10th, breaking the UK temperature record. Greycrook (Scottish Borders) beat the Scottish temperature record, when 32.9 °C was reported on the 9th. Carlton in Cleveland reported 48 mm of rainfall in just 15 minutes on 10th.

Another warm month across all parts of the UK in terms of mean temperature, but minimum temperatures were slightly below average over the SE. Very dry over Southern areas, but parts of N England and N Wales seeing above average rainfall. Very sunny over SE England and East Anglia.

Boscombe Down (Wiltshire) had their coldest September night since 1931, with a temperature of -0.1 on 24th. Redhill (Surrey) recorded a low of -2.8 on the same night.

OCTOBER
NOVEMBER
DECEMBER

A rather cold month across all parts of the UK, and the first month since October 2002 to be colder than average. Very sunny, with most parts also seeing another month of below average rainfall.

Saunton Sands (Devon) reported a temperature of 22.1 °C on the 2nd. Sleet and snow fell widely on Dartmoor on the 22nd with a covering above 1000 feet.

A mild month across all parts of the UK, with most areas also seeing above average sunshine. Over double the average rainfall over the SE of the UK, but some areas again receiving less than average rainfall.

Charlwood and Wisley ( both Surrey ) recorded over 3 inches of rainfall in just a 48 hour period between 21st and 23rd, which was over their normal average for the whole month.

A very changeable month across all parts. Most areas, except for Northern Ireland, experienced above average rainfall. Mean temperature slightly above average across all of the UK, with most Eastern areas having well above average sunshine.

Kinbrace (Highland) recorded a temperature of -16.1 °C on 31st. Glenlivet (Moray) reported 10 cm of lying snow on 22nd. Shap Fell (Cumbria) reported just over 80 mm in 18 hours on 26th.
