Leading scientists gather in Exeter

12 September 2005

Met Office scientists will be joining colleagues and peers from the field of meteorology at a major conference at the University of Exeter this week.

The Royal Meteorological Society’s biennial conference is an opportunity for leading experts from around the world to discuss the science around weather forecasting and climate change. This year the society decided to hold the conference in Exeter, where the Met Office – the UK’s national weather service – is now based.

The Royal Meteorological Society is the professional body for meteorologists and associated professions in the UK, and a large number of Met Office staff are members.

The conference, which is being held at the University of Exeter from 12-16 September, will discuss a variety of issues including:

  • the future of weather forecasting;
  • the effect on man of climate change;
  • flooding.

Roger Hunt, Met Office Director Transition Planning and Royal Meteorological Society member, said: “Over the years the Met Office has worked very closely with the Royal Meteorological Society – both in the areas of weather forecasting and climate change. We welcome them to Exeter and look forward to continuing to build on those strong links.
