Strong winds and heavy rain forecast

Gales and heavy rain are predicted by Met Office forecasters to affect the country through the rest of this week, as the weather turns very unsettled.

Gusts of 60 m.p.h. and more than 30 mm (more than an inch) of rain are possible for some areas, as two Atlantic depressions track across the country through the next three days.

As things currently stand, western and southern areas are more likely to experience the worst of the weather, with the strongest winds and most persistent, heavy rain spreading in through Thursday and Friday. The poor weather could possibly cause some disruption to travel.

The extended dry spell, affecting some areas of the UK, has now lasted more than 18 months, however it would take a prolonged period of very wet weather to replenish stocks to a significant degree.

The Met Office web site gives the latest information about severe weather warnings as they are issued.
