21 July 2006 Met Office forecasters are expecting many places to remain hot and humid over the weekend, although some northern areas will be cooler. Heavy thundery showers on Saturday will be followed by a drier, less hot day on Sunday. This weekend also marks the start of the summer holidays and one of the busiest for people travelling around the country. High temperatures and the possibility of heavy downpours could present extra difficulties on our roads and the public are advised to check the latest forecast on TV and radio, as well as online. The Highways Agency provides up-to-date travel information and advice online. By Wednesday of next week, very hot and humid weather will return to the UK and much of western Europe. It is also forecast to be exceptionally hot next week over France, a popular holiday destination for many Britons. During the course of the last week a new UK record high temperature for July was set on Wednesday, when 36.5 °C was reported at the RHS gardens, Wisley in Surrey. Wales also set a new July record, with 34.2 °C being recorded at Penhow, near Newport.
