News release

More storms on the way

1 December 2006

Met Office forecasters are warning that the current spell of unsettled weather will continue, as more severe gales and heavy rain are set to sweep across the country over the weekend.

Winds of 80 m.p.h. are possible in the worst-affected areas of the west. But all parts of the country will be very windy on Saturday night, possibly leading to disruption.

The coast and hills of Wales are likely to see gusts up to 80 m.p.h. late on Saturday and into the early hours of Sunday morning. South-west England, south-west Scotland and Northern Ireland will also be hit by strong winds - gusts may reach 70 m.p.h. Met Office forecasters say the storm will bring further rain to already waterlogged parts of Scotland, continuing the risk of flooding in these areas.

The storm looks likely to have a sting in its tail. Further severe gales will push into Northern Ireland, southern Scotland and northern parts of England during Sunday afternoon and evening, after a brief lull during the first part of Sunday.
