News release

More wet and windy weather to come

6 December 2006

More heavy rain and strong winds are expected for southern parts of the UK over the next few days, adding to the problems already occurring in some places.

The unsettled conditions are expected to affect Wales and southern England in particular later tonight and through Thursday, with gusts of 60 to 70 m.p.h. possible on coasts and hills. The heavy rain and strong winds will coincide with rush hour traffic tomorrow morning in south east England.

Met Office Chief Forecaster, Paul Davies added, "Heavy overnight rain followed by heavy squally showers will make for an unpleasant journey to work Thursday morning."

In Wales, heavy rain and showers are of particular concern after the recent spell of wet weather. The Environment Agency has already issued several flood warnings, whilst along the south coasts of England and Wales, severe gales and high tides could lead to coastal flooding.

Phil Rothwell, Head of Flood Risk Management Policy for the Environment Agency said: "We will continue to monitor the situation closely and Flood Watches or Warnings will be issued where appropriate, in order to give people as much notice as possible".
