The Met Office announces the launch of enhanced weather forecasts for Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons. The forecasts, which are available via the Met Office website, have been made possible due to funding from the Welsh Assembly Government through the Sports Council for Wales.
The weather in mountainous areas can exhibit extreme variation so checking the mountain forecast gives essential forewarning of the likely conditions on your chosen route. Our mountain forecasts are issued daily and cover daylight hours.
The key improvements to the forecasts include:
- improved visual impact for hazards;
- wind and temperature information for two additional levels at 300 m and 500 m;
- greater emphasis on wind chill;
- freezing-level heights;
- sunrise and sunset times.
We have also expanded the forecasts to include detailed two-day forecasts and a further three days in summary. Dave Robinson, head of Government Services said "These enhanced forecasts will enable hill walkers and mountain climbers to plan ahead which means that they can make the best of the weather and reduce the risk to their safety from adverse weather conditions".
