The Met Office is an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Founded in 1854, we became part of the modern MoD in 1964 and our links with the military continue to this day. Operations on land, sea and airWe deliver information and data to all three services, from the British Army, Joint Forces Northern Ireland to the Fleet Weather and Oceanographic Centre (FWOC) as well as ensuring that the Royal Air Force’s requirements are met whether they are flying fast jets or helicopters. We also provide forecasts for the United States Air Force Europe and software support for the NATO Automated Meteorological Information System (NAMIS).
The Met Office provides advice to senior defence officials on the likely flashpoints around the world where issues could be driven or exacerbated by climate change.
When deployed, MMU staff quickly establish a 'mini Met Office',
using portable weather displays and information systems,
to give aircrews the latest weather information. |
