Global deployability

Flexible data wherever you are

global deployabilityThe NATO Automated Meteorological Information System (NAMIS) has been in service with NATO nations for five years using the ACEWEX satellite broadcast to provide meteorological support to deployed units throughout Europe.

In order to provide global support to our military and those of co-operating nations, the Met Office is now in the process of developing systems similar to NAMIS that can operate globally.

The new systems will use the Met Office's PC-based Nimbus visualisation software, similar to that used for NAMIS, and receive data either via a dial-up Inmarsat satellite connection, for maximum deployability, or a standard dial-up internet connection, if available.

The system will also be able to receive data via ftp push using always-on internet communications, providing a low-cost system for a small military forecasting centre.

This capability will provide true deployability, from office to the front line throughout the world. The systems are currently undergoing testing and will be available later.
