Observations for energy

Land observations

Hourly/daily data including temperature, wind speed and direction, precipitation type and amount and relative humidity are available for more than 550 land-based locations across the UK.

Our climate team can advise you of the information available for your chosen location. Detailed historical operational information — Metadata — is available for many sites, and includes site location, site and instrument elevation, type of equipment and calibration/change of instrument records.

Marine observations

Marine Automatic Weather Stations (MAWS) are deployed mainly on the edge of the UK continental shelf. The network includes eleven moored buoys and seven systems on lightships and islands. Each measures air pressure, air temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, and moored buoys and lightships also offer sea temperature, wave height and period. Lightship systems also measure visibility. All stations transmit observations hourly, around the clock.

Historical data

Fully flexible database interrogation processes mean our information will meet your exact requirements, whether by location, parameter or date. Data are then delivered via email or on cd in .txt, .csv or Excel spreadsheet format.

Quality

Met Office climate and marine data is subject to an ISO9001 accredited end-to-end quality management
process which includes station inspections, instrument maintenance and data quality control (both manual and automated).

Current/real-time data

Recent observations for 60 UK locations and European waters buoys are available via our Commercial Data and Products Distribution System offering:
