Site-specific weather data

Unified Model

Improve your study accuracy and dispersion modelling simulations with reliable, quality controlled data. These data have been created from the Met Office's numerical weather prediction models to represent the way the atmosphere behaves.

  • An easy-to-use and versatile service, offering a variety of weather variables

  • Wind, rainfall, temperature and many other variables are now available on a single computer-generated grid covering the entire globe

  • Coverage is comprehensive - data are available for any site, including over the sea

Numerical weather prediction (NWP) models

The Unified Model is a Met Office numerical weather prediction model that runs on a NEC SX-6 supercomputer. Two scale versions are used, the global model and the 'mesoscale' model for UK and Europe.

The site-specific model (SSM) adds specific data to the numerical weather prediction products. It is one-dimensional and includes detailed treatment of all physical processes occurring in a column. The SSM predicts surface resistance to evaporation, multi-layer soil hydrology and soil-moisture freezing.

The benefits of applying the SSM to site-specific data include:

  • improved resolution;

  • accurate data for the exact location you're modelling;

  • better and more detailed knowledge of the effects of local orography and land use;

  • sophisticated treatment of surface-exchange processes.
