Hazards
Heavy rain, gales and hill fog.
General situation
Mild, cloudy and disturbed weather covers Scotland on Tuesday, improving overhead and colder for Wednesday, but shortlived with more poor conditions developing on Thursday.
Weather
An overcast rainy day with the rain becoming persistent and occasionally heavy. Patchy hill fog will also become extensive, especially on South or Southeast facing hills across the Southern and Eastern Highlands.
Visibility
Mostly moderate but occasionally poor. 200 metres in hill fog.
Cloud base
Overcast base mostly around 700 metres, occasionally banks thickening to extensive cover and lowering 250 to 400metres, especially late morning onwards, the eastern Highlands most prone. The Northwest to the west of Aviemore and down to Ben Alder will see the base lifting 1000 metres or just above summits at times.
Wind and temperature at 900m
Southeast 25 to 30mph, but 40mph gusting 50mph Eastern Grampian at first, falling Variable 10mph from mid afternoon, then Northwest 15 to 20mph later. 9 Celsius
Freezing level
Above summits.

Forecast for daylight hours for Wednesday
Weather
Early rain and hill fog clearing by mid morning then bright with blustery showers and sunny spells. Most of the showers over the more Northwestern ranges, where some will be heavy with patchy hill fog. However further south towards Ben Lawers and Lochnagar drier with longer sunny intervals.
Visibility/cloud base
Excellent but briefly moderate in showers. 200 metres in hill fog. Broken 600 to 800 metres, perhaps overcast 500 metres at first across the Cairngorms and Eastern Highlands. Lifting and breaking to mostly well broken 900 to 1400 metres through the day, highest bases in the South and East.
Wind/temperature/freezing level
Westerly 30 to 40mph, strongest in North. Temperature 8 reducing 4 Celsius with freezing level just above summits. Moderate wind chill developing on Northern Munros.

Outlook for Thursday

Starting dry and bright with some hazy sunshine, but cloud will thicken from west to bring rain eastwards during the afternoon. Hill fog will develop widely later, especially on west facing hills where rain will turn heavier later. Southwest winds will increase to gale force over hills with gusts 50mph.

Outlook for Friday

Starting dull, wet and windy with further heavy rain and severe gales in the morning accompanied by widespread hill fog. However much brighter weather with blustery showers and sunny glimpses will spread east late in the day. Gales will persist over summits but hill fog will tend to lift and break up later.

Outlook for Saturday

Another windy day with blustery showers and some sunny intervals. West to Southwest gales again expected over hills with patchy hill fog.
