Background information

Estimates of global mean surface-temperature for the year ahead have been requested by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) as an indicator of the progress of climate change. The forecasts are produced by the Met Office using a combination of statistical methods and coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model predictions of sea temperature in the tropical Pacific.

Latest forecast (for 2008)

Global temperature for 2008 is expected to be 0.37 °C above the long-term (1961-1990) average, the coolest year since 2000 when the value was 0.24 °C.
