Updated: 0543 on Sat 22 Nov 2008 UK Outlook for Thursday 27 Nov 2008 to Saturday 6 Dec 2008:This period's weather is expected to be dominated by high pressure southwest of the UK and areas of low pressure moving eastwards to the north or northeast of Britain. This is likely to lead to a cloudy, mild type covering most parts at first, with rain spreading steadily south and eastwards. Following this initial mild type another rather cold and unsettled spell follows for the weekend giving some sleet or snow in places, especially the north. There may also be gales or severe gales in places. The generally northwesterly or northerly flow should persist thereafter, although it is likely to become less cold at times. Temperatures will be mostly below normal to rather cold, but there will be some spells when temperatures are nearer normal. Updated: 1212 on Sat 22 Nov 2008 Seasonal forecasting:Seasonal forecasting is a developing area of meteorology and, although these forecasts are not as accurate as our short-term forecasts, they do demonstrate some skill in predicting what may happen for a season (a three-month period) ahead. The forecasts provide an estimation of broad trends in temperature and rainfall and will normally be expressed in probabilistic terms, with the more likely outcome highlighted. Information contained in these forecasts can allow business to plan ahead for weather that is forecast to be different from normal.
